Blogs, ethics, and the sports page

Alex Belth has a number of links to the dust-up over Steve Silva's antics on the vile (though often very funny) Boston Dirt Dogs site. Seems Silva's BDD has been purchased by Boston.com. Boston.com, for those of you outside the northeast, is owned by The New York Times Co., which also owns The Boston Globe. And here's where it gets fun -- The Boston Globe's web presence is on, you guessed it, Boston.com.

Now, it seems that Silva got an email from someone named Jennifer, who told Silva that she'd had a chat with Nomar Garciaparra who told her he didn't want the World Series ring the Red Sox were planning to give him. Silva, has is his habit, immediately posted the email to his site. Turns out, though, that "Jennifer" sent it to him as a hoax, to see if he'd actually post it.

So, now Boston media watchers -- and fans of the Boston Globe's sports section, such as the Vega -- want to know: doesn't the Globe have a responsibility to distance itself from Silva since he now shares the paper's Boston.com address? Jeff Sullivan has an interesting take on this, as well as the "dirt" on a long list of ethical lapses tied to the Globe's highly regarded sports page.
