The song remains the same
I guess what makes the GOP machine so depressing and ennervating is the relentless redundancy and repetition of the tactics and and attacks they employ.
A critic of the administration's management of the war in Iraq? Swift boat him.
Shakey prospects for the mid-terms? Announce a new imminent threat.
One could argue that it's simply a case of if it ain't broke, don't fix it; that the tactics have been so successful it would be foolish not to keep going to the same well. But while Rove & Co. may outwardly claim that their rhetoric is convincing, I think they understand that it doesn't really matter if people forced to listen to the giant Wurlitzer believe what they're hearing. It's the constant barrage of bullshit that is the goal, not actually convincing anyone of anything. The effect is white noise which suppresses the sound of any counter-argument. Add to that the feeble voices of our leading Democrats, and that is a recipe for GOP success.
