Dissin' the Yankees' dynamic duo

Overall, I agree with Scott Long's contention that baseball teams should find more lively radio broadcasters, but all I can say is ouch.

The one crew that is almost unlistenable to me is the Yankees duo of John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. To be fair to Sterling, he's an acquired taste, but Waldman shouldn't have the gig. I have no problem with her as a reporter, but I just don't think a woman should be in the booth as an analyst of a men's sport. I might be able to get past this though, if she didn't have such an annoying New Yawk voice. It's like listening to the Fabulous Sports Babe, all over again. While I'm a fan of having non-jocks in the analyst's role, I hate that someone like Waldman was giving one of the first chances at this position, as she isn't exactly as Jackie Robinson-like ambassador.

Sterling. An "acquired taste?" Sterling is a homie from the first pitch to the last. He's got a good voice, but he calls every pitch of every one of the team's 162 games, plus the (lately, unfortunately, foreshortened) post-season, and it's a taste you tend to un-acquire as the season goes on.

His comments about Suzyn, though, are a bit bizarre. I prefer her as a reporter, and she has a tendency to sort of disappear when Sterling says something stupid, but what the hell does he mean, "I just don't think a woman should be in the booth as an analyst of a men's sport?" Is Dick Button hereby banned from broadcasting women's figure skating?

Furthermore Scott might want to note that Suzyn and her "New Yawk voice" is calling...the New. York. Yankees games. Or, if you prefer the New Yawk Yankees. Because hicks like him in flyover country don't like her sonorous tone while jumping from XM station to XM station who cares? She's often a refreshing change to Sterling's tenor, and if she would allow the personality that made her such a great host of the overnight call-in show on WFAN ("That's just stupid, Jerome..."), she could be just the kind of personality to shake up the booth and make the Yankee broadcasts a lot more fun to listen to. Just what Scott Long is calling for.
