The trials of Paul Konerko

Konerko Rejoins White Sox for 5 Years
By JACK CURRY
Thirty-five days after Paul Konerko celebrated a long overdue World Series title with the Chicago White Sox, he agreed to a five-year, $60 million contract that will enable him to try to win another championship with them.

Konerko had a better offer from the Baltimore Orioles, who dangled a $65 million package, and also had a similar $60 million offer from the Los Angeles Angels. But, once the White Sox increased their proposal to five years, Konerko quickly accepted and happily returned to play first base for Chicago.

"This wore me down the past couple of weeks, more than anything that's happened," Konerko said. "I've never been so torn over things. It was like a roller coaster. I was caught off guard. It was tough."

It's a hardball world, indeed. I'm glad Paul Konerko's long ordeal is over.
