The wind it was howlin' and the snow was outrageous.

That pretty much sums up the conditions on the playing field in New York this past week.

Some random Yankee thoughts:

  • Yesterday's lineup was not, um, Murderers' Row. Self-inflicted Wound Street maybe. But can we stop with the "We want Bern-ie" chants already? Time to move on. Meanwhile, Bern baby bern.
  • I have to admit, I get the same feeling as Alex Belth when I'm watching Alex Rodriguez bat in situations like Saturday's ninth inning. In order to avoid having my stomach tied in a knot though, I assume an ironic expression as he swings and misses. But when he hit the ball, I thought at first he'd popped it up, and then the TV screen shifted to a shot of center field and we could see the center fielder's back. That, I thought, is promising. The ball sailed into the batter's eye seats in left center, and I howled with delight. The whole team then looked like twelve year olds -- Posada literally skipped out of the dugout in his catcher's gear. It was great. And Rodriguez's remarks after the game were telling: "I thought even with two outs it would come down to me. It always seems to." He's the swizzle that stirs the drink, alright, to paraphrase Reggie Jackson.
  • After A-Rod comes through in the ninth on Sunday, one of the tabloids had this steaming pile of snark on the back page: "Mr. April." A "somewhat popular blogger" must be writing the headlines.
  • Yankee starting pitching isn't really this bad, is it? Well, is it? Chien Ming Wang can't get off the DL fast enough. And is the relief pitching really this good?
  • Will Melky Cabrera learn to hit in the majors? I love the kid, and he's the best outfielder on the team, but he's getting at-bats and yesterday he got his first and only hit of the season. In the first inning.
  • Carl Pavano should be interesting tonight. Opening Day jitters are behind him and he'll be pitching in a nice warm dome. On the other side, do the Yankees avoid a Johann Santana siting this trip?
  • Speaking of domes: Message to the scheduling genii at Major League Baseball -- April in the Northeast is usually cold. The wind it howls and the snow is outrageous.
