Somewhere, I'm sure someone is sketching designs for the monument. Shit.
It was said, post-Vietnam, that Americans couldn't stomach U.S. casualties. This became an excuse for a timid foreign policy that avoided conflict in places where U.S. forces might have made a difference. Like Lebanon, Somalia, Rwanda, etc. I don't know where all the outrage has gone.
