It has been said that negative ads backfire, but I don't know. It seems that they do turn off those folks unlikely to go to the polls and are looking for an excuse to say "they're all crooks." The Right knows that suppressing the unlikely voters is to their advantage. Their goal is to keep fanning the flames of their base's irrational hatred. It works.
