An "uh oh" moment in Iraq

When I hear this from U.S. commanders, I get a sick feeling in my stomach: "'First, we are going to win,' General Abizaid said, seated alongside Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, the American field commander in Iraq. 'Secondly, everyone needs to understand that there is no more powerful force assembled on earth than this military force in this country that's backed up with our naval and air forces in near proximity.'"

Even Powell is "disquieted."

But don't bother Preznit, he's out touring the back 40 with Wayne LaPierre.

"This is Bush's 33rd visit to his ranch since becoming president. He has spent all or part of 233 days on his Texas ranch since taking office, according to a tally by CBS News. Adding his 78 visits to Camp David and his five visits to Kennebunkport, Maine, Bush has spent all or part of 500 days in office at one of his three retreats, or more than 40 percent of his presidency."

And there I was feeling guilty for skipping off to the Bronx to catch the Yankees this afternoon.

As Robert Wright opines in this morning's Times, the continued lack of reality in the Bush administration is increasingly scarifying.
