The Fightin' Banana Slugs

Slug: Any of various small, snaillike, chiefly terrestrial gastropod mollusks of the genus Limax and related genera, having a slow-moving elongated body with no shell or only a flat rudimentary shell on or under the skin.

Also the mascot of UC Santa Cruz, I believe.

Hmmm.

That didn’t stop the student protesters. About 75 of them pushed their way in, carrying signs and a banner that said "Military Off Our Campus." They chanted, "Racist, Sexist, Anti-Gay. Hey, recruiters, go away."

Well, it does rhyme. Sort of.

Campus police and firefighters blocked the doors, keeping more than 100 students outside. They kept up a drumbeat of protest, and inside it was hard to hear over the din.

UCSC administrators were flustered.

"I wish they would leave," said Sheila Rodriguez, who oversees student internship programs.

"They have the right to protest, but it’s a little disruptive," said Mike Rich, human resources officer for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

"They’re causing chaos," said Carrie Czaykowska, a senior in business management and economics. "It’s kind of sad."
