Pope John Paul II: A commemoration in materialism
Both Time and Newsweek have their commemorative issues this week and I've just been leafing through the print editions of both. In Time, a section called "A Pilgrim's Journey" is followed by (at least in my demographic edition) the magazine's weekly "Inside Business" section (I won't even mention the Joe Klein inanity that precedes the papal perambulations;Digby has so ably demolished that column) already.
Meanwhile, Newsweek, following a "Periscope" item on a new book that argues that women's shoes reflect the essence of their soul, actually interrupts the magazine's "Prayers for a New Life" article on post-JPII Catholicism, and inserts the "Newsweek Enterprise" section in the middle of the article.
So much for John Paul II's admonitions against American materialism.
