Republican Leadership
While we sit back and watch and listen to the ongoing attempts to mythologoize the late Ronald Reagan, it is useful to take a close look at the real Republican party leadership -- the Texas GOP. Kevin Drum comments on their 2004 party platform and, since it's not yet available on the site, looks at the 2000 platform (which he expects will not differ greatly from the current version).
In it, they call for, among other things, the criminalization of homosexuality, a return to the gold standard, an end to all forms of abortion, eliminating Supreme Court Constitutional review of "certain" laws passed by congress, pulling the U.S. out of the U.N., and on and on they go.
While they are clearly insane and off the margins of mainstream society, the Texas GOP is also the organization that has given us Tom Delay and George Bush -- in other words, the guys running our country.
