There seems to be little hesitation on the part of editors of the leading national newspapers to make allusions to Obama's assassination these days.

Not so sure this isn't just lazy writing -- many headlines seem to incorporate war or sports metaphors. I spend the odd moment now and again rephrasing such headlines into less combative terms such as "McCain aide readies anti-Obama talking points." It makes reading the news much more pleasant.
