Truth is, populist appeals such as Edwards' "two Americas" have generally fallen flat and the conventional wisdom has been that Americans don't respond to criticism of the wealthiest Americans because they, too, want to be one of those wealthy Americans. Offering hope while also offering to increase the potential for opportunity may be Obama's strongest argument yet.
