I don't believe Vlad Guerrero votes Republican

So, I'm reading the little Q&A that Senator Mitchell agreed to have with The NY Daily News. Nothing particularly shocking, until I read this,

DN: But if you were a player — who are more often than not conservative Republicans — and your future and name were in the hands of a former U.S. Senator with ties to ownership, would you feel comfortable relying on his judgment and goodwill, and not a standard like the Bill of Rights, guiding this?

GM: Of course, they're not just relying on my judgment and goodwill, they're also relying upon the truth and the facts of the circumstances as they exist. And anybody has a right not to meet with me. I have no power to compel anyone to talk to me. At the same time I've been asked to do a job which involves an inquiry into the past which necessarily covers evidence and information that includes allegations, and you have to try to strike the proper balance. In the end I think people have to use their own judgment based on their own standards and their own interests on what to do.

MLB players are "more often than not conservative Republicans?" Yes, there are a few who openly support Republicans and even one who, while totally insane, is a conservative Republican on the Hill. But, "more often than not?" Where did that come from? I'm genuinely interested. It's generally been my impression that professional baseball players don't have the slightest clue about what's going on in politics or the issues of the day.

Oh, wait, maybe that's what the writers mean.
