20,000 leagues from the nearest woman

Like James Wolcott, Madame Cura and I found ourselves watching 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and found it extremely entertaining, particularly James Mason's Capt. Nemo. I had long forgotten it's strong anti-war message and how believable its special effects were. But I had also forgotten something that makes it, I think, unique amongst it's ilk of Victorian sci-fi adventure stories, such as The Time Machine, Journey to the Center of the Earth, etc.: there's not a single female character. Peter Lorre doesn't count.

There is no explanation in the film as to how tension is, um, relieved on The Nautilus.
