Some perspective on Rovegate

Tom Oliphant is doing the rounds pushing his new book on the Brooklyn Dodgers' '55 season and did the Mike and the Mad Dog show today on WFAN. At the end, Francessa asked him about Karl Rove. I paraphrase. "He's not going to be fired. And the charges are garbage. Lefties should remember Clinton and not overplay their hand. He's going to be nicked though."

I agree with the part about not overplaying the hand. But that's why the rest of what he says is bullshit. Tom Oliphant doesn't know if the charges are "garbage." No one does except, maybe, Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor. The truth is, we're just going to have to wait and see how this all plays out. The press should keep up their new found pressure on Scottie McClellan, but let's hold off on the predictions and the vivid wet dream of watching Rove doing the perp walk from the West Wing.

That said, there's a bigger overall issue here that is getting drowned out by the gas being emitted by the Republican oxen pulling the wagons circling around the Turd Blossom, and by the furious debunking of their talking points by the left side of the blogosphere.

The Bush administration did everything they could to "fix" the intelligence on Iraq and then did all they could to wing anyone in a position to uncover that fix. That effort goes on to this day, and it's why their defense of Rove is so furious and frantic.

I know watching Rove squirm (although I haven't actually seen him "squirm," have you?) is a great deal of fun. But it is just a symptom of the disease, not the disease itself. And I know it's important to keep fighting back against the wave of inanity his backers are spewing forth, otherwise the recent history of this shameful act of political revenge will be obscured, forgotten. But it is taking attention away from the bigger picture. As an example, I have been searching the land for any reference to the Wall Street Journal/NBC poll that came out earlier this week, and can find no reference to it anywhere. The results of the poll, written up by the Journal's John Harwood, indicated that not only have Bush's poll numbers dropped below the surface, Americans now support the war, but don't support Bush's handling of it. Even more telling, most Americans now don't find Bush to be honest -- what got him elected in the first place.

That's what we should be focusing on. Fuck Karl Rove (I say that alot). It's the culture of lies that pervades the White House we should talk about day after day. The rest of the citizenry is starting to understand that.

Actually, Rove's defenders are doing us a favor, by rehashing this incident daily, they are constant reminders to the American public of how they suckered by this crew, to the tune of 1,700 plus American troops and billions in treasure. Keep it up, guys.
